family.
15 July
- Petalonyx thurberi ssp. thurberi (Sandpaper
Plant) added to Loasaceae
family.
9 July
- Most of the last 3 1/2 months I've spent studying the
XID key-building tools in depth, and learning how to use XID to create as
useful a plant ID search key as possible for serious weekend
botanists. I'm now turning to building an XID key linked to the
wildflower photos on this website. I'll be making the XID key itself
available for downloading starting near the end of this summer. Users
will need to have a licensed copy of the XID program on their computer in
order to make use of the downloaded key.
- Part of the key-building requires in-depth review of
the family groups of photos. I was embarrassed (actually more like
horrified) to discover that the Onagraceae
family group was badly in need of repairs and updating. The 14 species
now online in that family group are all supported with reasonably complete
view sets. Similar makeovers are likely for other family groups that
are well represented in San Diego County.
21 March
- Note to CNPS meeting attendees: Last evening I briefly
demonstrated use of the XID-Oregon key from Flora ID Northwest, and
mentioned that you could find a link to them by referring to this
page. You can do this indirectly by going to the main http://www.xidservices.com/
website for XID, then click the Affiliates link where Flora ID Northwest is
the top item listed. Follow the red "Click Here!" link, then
click "Contact" for ways to reach Bruce Barnes. Also shown
at the meeting was my "To-Be-Identified
Exercises" thumbnails matrix index page.
11 March
- Talking
Paper for discussion of possible XID key adapted for the SDNHM Plant Atlas
community.
20 February
- The XID Multiple-Entry Key system will
be replacing Lucid3 on this project!! At beginning of February,
the SDNHM Plant Atlas project group and I were introduced to XID in
connection with a large taxonomic key built for California Weed
Identification by Joe DiTomaso and colleagues at U.C.Davis. Details on XID,
and on the Weeds key, may be found at http://www.xidservices.com/.
See especially the suite of short online video presentations (reached via
the link near bottom of the XIDservices overview page).
- With the help of Dr. Richard Old, the originator of
XID, I've converted both of my Lucid3 based keys to run under XID. The
comparative ease with which a person with limited botany experience can use
XID to find the Genus and Species, for a plant previously unknown to that
person, is a big improvement relative to using Lucid3. Therefore, my work
with the multiple-entry keys will now continue based on XID rather than
Lucid.
- There's one important practical difference in the
arrangements for making these keys available to users of this website.
The XID reader program only runs when installed on a user's
own computer running a recent version of Microsoft Windows - not with a
Browser (such as Internet Explorer or FireFox) referring to a website. A
small license fee must be paid for rights to use the program, and this is
typically paid as part of the price of a Compact Disc containing the
program, the subject XID key(s), and the associated data files. While all of
these files can be used directly from such a CD, the program runs a lot more
responsively when all of the files are copied to your computer's hard
disk. Once installed in that manner, updates (additions and changes)
to the key and data files can be downloaded from a website such as this one,
and copied to your hard disk.
- During the next several weeks I'll be making
refinements to the two XID keys in preparation to demonstrate their use at
the March 20 meeting of the San Diego chapter of CNPS at Balboa Park. At
that presentation (and shortly afterward on this website), I'll announce
arrangements whereby interested users can get copies of these XID copies for
their own use. As part of the refinements, I'll be writing "Tips
..." notes to help on use of the XID system, and those will be posted
on this website in roughly the same manner as the notes currently posted on
using the Lucid keys. E-mail inquiries from users potentially
interested in using these keys will be welcome as usual. ... klb
28 January
- Salsola tragus moved to Amaranthaceae
family group in accord with Checklist 4th edition.
- Addition of species details to the Families of Wildflowers
Lucid3 key continues. Expand the Entities Remaining tree in the key to
see species currently included (currently 51 species in 29 families).
- Yellow Chuparosa photos added to Justicia
californica set in Acanthaceae
family.
23 January
20 January
- Matrix Index page added pointing to Unidentified
Copies of plant photograph sets for 20 Species among the off-beat
sample species recently added to the Families of Wildflowers
Lucid3 key. These are duplicate photographs that are identified within
their respective family groupings. The Unidentified Copies are
provided for use as practice exercises while learning to use the new key.
- Details added to the Families of Wildflowers
Lucid3 key for off-beat sample species in Brassicaceae, Campanulaceae,
Fabaceae, Hydrophyllaceae, Krameriaceae, Lamiaceae, Limnanthaceae, Linaceae,
Simmondsiaceae, Solanaceae.
12 January
- Details added to the Families of Wildflowers
Lucid3 key for sample species in Capparaceae, Convolvulaceae,
Frankeniaceae, Gentianaceae, and Zygophyllaceae families.
Photographs useful in identifying several of these species (but not
previously posted here) have also been added.
- Wislizenia refracta photos added to the
Capparaceae family section. (This was a side-effect of my key-building
activity. I had previously mis-identified the plant as Cleomella
obtusifolia, since the flowers are similar.)
8 January, 2007
- After testing my new Lucid3 key to Families of Wildflowers known in
San Diego County using photos for several off-beat families, it became clear
that this key will need to include at least Genus information in
addition to Family level information from The Jepson Manual.
I've concluded that the best way to do this is to add data to the Entities
tree/list for sample Species, starting with those for which I have
photographs posted on this website. In view of the extensive changes of the Family
assignments accepted for many common Genera, this is the only
practical way to make the key really useful to most users.
- Because there are over 450 (sub)species now included in
85+ families on this website, it will take at least a couple of months to
make the key generally useful. But as the spring season advances in our
area, some users may find the key helpful well before the majority of the
families are fully coded. So I'll be updating what's online several times
per month (not as rapidly as I had hoped), and will announce which families
have been filled-out on this page. Progress likely will be slower
during the next month or so, and the total number of Features and States
will continue to grow during that period, as I seek out family/genus
groupings which tend to be less typical.
- As of today, I'm adding details to the key for samples
of the Euphorbiaceae and Rhamnaceae species for which I have
good photographs. To limit the time taken, I'll generally be including only
two Species for each Genus for which I have good photographs
on the first round of additions to the key. This should typically allow
closely approximating the Genus of a plant a user wishes to identify
... but as always, I recommend completing the identification using the Genus
and Species level keys in The Jepson Manual directly.
- Since the data in this key will still be changing
significantly for the next month or so, I now plan
to delay including Help pages with detailed ID search samples. The Help
pages introducing the Asteraceae family key will provide a good
introduction of the Lucid3 mechanics. But I'm finding so far that the best
methods for using the all-families key are somewhat different - perhaps
indicating that I should eventually modify my recommendations for the Asteraceae
key too.
31 December
- Simmondsiaceae
(Jojoba) family added.
- Pages showing screenshots of all family Matrix Index
pages, and linking to those Index pages have been added to the Lucid Families of Wildflowers
key. Family Profile pages have also been added.
28 December
- Continuing the shuffing of Family associations:
27 December
- Since last posting, I've developed and posted a new
Lucid3 Key to (most of) the Families of Wildflowers known in
San Diego County according to Checklist of the Vascular Plants of San
Diego County, 4th Edition, by Jon Rebman and Michael Simpson (2006).
This key is already quite useful, but it's still a work in progress ... TBD:
links to my photos via the Matrix Index page for each family, diagrams to
illustrate the "Features" (botanic character values), illustrated
Help pages, fine adjustments to make the key more useful for Families that
are large in California but which have few representatives in the San Diego
region. Temporarily, the link on the SDWildflowers overview page initiates
the Key directly.
- As part of preparation of the Families Key, I'm
shuffling the Family associations of several Genera and Species that
recently have been moved. Goal is to bring my Families into agreement with
the new Checklist. Most Matrix and Photo indexes on this
website will then need to be updated to reflect these changes.
Completed so far:
- All of Veronicaceae (which until recently
had been part of Scrophulariaceae) has been moved to Plantaginaceae.
- Asclepias and Sarcostemma moved from Asclepiadaceae
to Apocynaceae.
- Sambucus moved from Caprifoliaceae to
Adoxaceae
14 November
30 October
- One additional Feature: State term "±
Tomentose or Canescent" is now split into two separate State terms.
- In addition to several additional Feature: State
illustration drawings, I've added 60 closeup photographs as Feature: State
illustrations. The total of 83 drawings, and 60 closeup illustration photos
now completes the set that I have readily available for use in the Features
Tree (left side) of the Lucid Key.
21 October
- With the kind permission of Spring Lake Publishing,
I've added drawings to illustrate many of the Feature: State values in the
Lucid key. The drawings are from the book "Plant
Identification Terminology - An Illustrated Glossary" by James G.
Harris and Melinda Woolf Harris, Copyright 1994 & 2001. For State
values not easily illustrated with drawings, I've started adding photographs
as illustrations. Both may be displayed using the little
illustration-available icons in the Features tree panels (left side) of the
key. Note that some State values are illustrated with 2 or more diagrams
and/or photos - use the "=>" icon in the menu bar of the pop-up
Lucid3 Image Viewer window (if colored blue - i.e. not grayed-out) to access
the additional illustrations.
- At the suggestion of Jon Rebman, I've split 3 Feature:
State terms in the Lucid key into their component parts as follows:
- Stems: Surface: "Canescent or Bristly" now separated into
"Canescent" and "Bristly"
- Leaves: Shape: "(Ob)Ovate" now separated
into "Obovate" and "Ovate"
- Fruit: Shape: "(Ob)Ovoid" now separated
into "Obovoid" and "Ovoid"
You'll find a few Asteraceae species described in The Jepson Manual as
exhibiting characteristics ranging between these limits, and for those the
key now lists both terms as "present" in some species.
5 October
- I've added a detailed user guide note Stage
3: Differentiating Among (Sub)Species
Within One Genus to the "Tips ..." and "Stage 2: ..."
search notes previously posted. This introduces Genus-Profile
pages which compare the coded State values for all (sub)Species in each
single Genus in the Lucid key.
21 September
- Following lengthy study, and helpful comments from
Kevin Thiele (the originator of Lucid), I've rebuilt the Lucid Key to the
Asteraceae of San Diego County -- this time without any of the
Not-Scoped scores which had made the key confusing to use. Completely
revised notes on use of the key to search for plant species identifications
may be found starting with the "Tips on Getting Started ..." page
linked from the Lucid Key Overview page
(which is linked from the S.D.Wildflowers overview page).
4 September
- I've revised my Browser Problems?
notes (this link is always at
bottom-right on my wildflowers overview page) regarding the problem of
long halts and delays in loading my matrix index pages and other
photographs from this website. If you've
been experiencing this problem, hopefully help is on the way.
30 August
- Sonchus oleraceus added to the Asteraceae
Ligulate subfamily. This example is the first I've found as a
credible illustration of what would happen (during a Lucid key search) if
the controls to eliminate "Features" (i.e. botanic characters)
MISSING from the Jepson Manual were not in use. See the Notes
associated with the first photo for this species.
28 August
- The Asteraceae
Radiate subfamily is now completed for all of the species for which
I have sufficient photographs to complete the ID's. The "Notes"
annotating all of the recently added/modified species collections include
screenshots and brief descriptions showing identification examples using the
Lucid Key. I'll be adding more of these examples in the next few weeks.
- After promising that I would make updates at roughly
weekly intervals, I discovered that I had left various errors and omissions
in the Lucid key ... many of them causing surprises associated with the
coding of the "Specified in Jepson Manual" and "Jepson
Specification MISSING" states. Though the number of discrepancies
amounted to less than 1/2 percent of all the cells in the key, the number
was large because the key contains roughly 200,000 cells. After several days
of manual checking for errors, I realized that it would be better to find
the discrepancies using a consistency checker program (which I had to write
and debug). The discrepancies found in this way are now corrected, most of
them amounting to "typo's" rather than errors in reading the
Jepson Manual descriptions.
- Still to be corrected in the key: Errors /
Inconsistencies resulting from the lack of standards for interpretation of
descriptive botanic terms, and for listing of even the obvious states (i.e.
known to all professional botanists), in the Jepson Manual. I'll need
help from the local botanist community to get the key closer to correct in
this respect.
7 August
- The Asteraceae
Radiate subfamily is now revised up through Hulsea californica,
except for addition of two Helianthus species still to be done. I've
dropped photos labelled Gutierrezia californica, and two subspecies
labelled under Heterotheca sessiliflora, because I had insufficient
photo views to complete the ID's.
- Experience with the Lucid key resulted in several minor
corrections for species involved in the Asteraceae Radiate subfamily.
In addition, I've added "Specified in Jepson Manual" and
"Jepson Specification MISSING" SubFeatures in most of the main
Features groups, having found they are really needed to avoid dead-ends in
making searches for many species. A useful reality check at end of a search
is to back-out (uncheck) the "Specified in Jepson Manual" boxes,
and make sure that this doesn't result in adding (sub)species back into the
Entities Remaining list. I'll be updating my Strategy Notes to discuss this
point.
1 August
- With update to full set of photos for Achillea
millefolium I've begun full revision of the Asteraceae
Radiate subfamily. The revision will include name updates to conform
with SDNHM Checklist version 4 changes. In the course of doing this, the
present set of 33 species will expand to approximately 40 after errors are
corrected and all ID's have been checked using the Lucid3 - based key. This
process will also result in small corrections/updates to the key itself. To
avoid cluttering this page with a large number of closely spaced change
notices, I will post progress notices here at roughly weekly intervals. The
order of progression will be alphabetic according to the genus names.
The Notes attached to the first photograph for each species will link to a
screen-shot showing the Lucid key search progress either at or near the step
showing the final ID match.
28 July
- With three weeks taken out for a birding expedition in
southern Oregon and Northern California, I've begun correcting errors, and
adding new species, to several of the Asteraceae subfamily groups. In
general, these corrections will make use of analysis using the Lucid3 - based
key referenced on 28 June.
- Jon Rebman, Director of Botany at SDNHM kindly reviewed my Asteraceae
collections early in July. Based on his comments I've corrected photo ID's
for Centaurea melitensis (was C. solstitialis), and Carduus
pycnocephalus (was Cirsium occidentale var. occidentale). Several
mis-identified species will be dropped from the Asteraceae-Radiate, and
Asteraceae-Ligulate subfamilies for lack of sufficiently varied views of the
plants to permit a correct identification.
28 June
- Lucid3 - based Multiple-Entry
Key for San Diego Asteraceae species
is now ready for use and evaluation by SDNHM Plant Atlas Project
participants, and by others who may be interested. Caution: This key is now
in what amounts to early "Beta-Test" status, and feedback on
errors and/or omissions you may find will be much appreciated.
27 May
- Encelia frutescens added to Asteraceae
Discoid subfamily.
- Hiatus of 3 weeks is result of my re-implementing part
of my Multiple-Entry Key for the Asteraceae of San Diego County using the
Lucid3 key-building system of University of Queensland. The Lucid
based keys are so much better that I'm in the process of re-implementing
completely. I'll be posting a preliminary version of the AsteraceaeSD key
for use by interested members of the SDNHM Plant Atlas Project later this
coming week. Links and progress details will appear in the Plant Atlas
section of this website (link at bottom of the main S.D.Wildflowers page).
3 May
- Ceanothus cuneatus var cuneatus and Ziziphus parryi var. parryi
added to Rhamnaceae
family. Ceanothus greggii var. perplexans updated with more detailed
photos.
25 April ... updated 28 April
- Stillingia linearifolia added to Euphorbiaceae
family. Judy Gibson at SDNHM kindly helped me to identify these
unusual plants
with spikes of tiny flowers (staminate above pistillate) found
last week at junction of Oriflamme and Rodriguez canyon washes.
15 April ... updated 26 April
- Eschscholzia minutiflora
added to Papaveraceae
(Poppy) family, along with Notes
(reachable via the left-column Notes link with
1st closeup photo) which explain ID problems if one uses the current
versions of The Jepson Manual or The Jepson Desert Manual.
13 April
- Lycium andersonii, Lycium brevipes var. brevipes, and Lycium cooperi
added to Solanaceae
(Nightshade) family.
11 April
- Cleomella obtusifolia (Mojave Stinkweed) added to Capparaceae
(Caper) family.
- Ephedra viridis (Green Ephedra) added starting Ephedraceae
(Ephedra) family.
- Fagonia laevis (California Fagonia) added to Zygophyllaceae
(Caltrop) family.
- Sarcostemma hirtellum (Trailing Townula) added to Asclepiadaceae
(Milkweed) family.
10 April
- Lepidium lasiocarpum var. lasiocarpum (Sand
Peppergrass) added to Brassicaceae
(Mustard) family.
29 March
- Extensive revision of Polygonaceae
(Buckwheat) family, which now shows detail on 14 (sub)species, and corrects
several earlier identification errors.
25 March
- Boraginaceae
family updated to slide-show with 9 species now
included. See Notes attached to the family matrix index page
regarding identification problems and "±"
notation.
23 March
21 March
20 March
18 March
17 March
- Desert
Wildflowers in a Very Dry Year. Photos of blooming wildflowers in
Anza Borrego Park 7-9 March, 2006 (just before the latest significant rain
storm arrived). Ordered roughly as a North-South tour. See Notes attached to
the thumbnails index page for more info.
4 March
- Radial
subfamily of Fabaceae updated to slide-show, and Prosopis
glandulosa var. torreyana (Honey Mesquite) added.
- I'll be filling out most of the rest of Fabaceae
in small stages (leaving the harder to identify example species until last)
over the next several weeks. To avoid clutter in this list, I'll only
post additional notices here as each subfamily is brought up to date.
15 February
- (7:00 PM PST) Uploading of larger images files
completed.
- Photo-based Key rearranged to make flower images correspond better with
Key branch page descriptions. For comparison, I've left the old version
linked from main SDWildflowers overview page temporarily.
- A drill/practice exercise page has been linked to the new
For Students & Teachers
page. This is based on the observation that the most efficient way to
use any wildflowers field guide, or the Jepson Manual, is to learn to
recognize the botanic Families.
7 February
- S.D.Wildflowers overview page
and top-level Photo-based Key revised to make them more interesting to
newcomers, and more efficient for those familiar with this site.
2 February
- In Caryophyllaceae
family, plant incorrectly identified as Loeflingia squarrosa now
corrected to read Cardionema ramosissimum (thanks to Don Tate for
pointing out the error).
30 January
29 January
- Asteraceae
Ligulate subfamily now up to date with
all 14 species/subspecies for which I have detailed photographs. All are in
the full-screen size for 1024 wide displays.
- In preparation of the Asteraceae Ligulate subfamily
for posting here, I reviewed all of the relevant identifications using my Multiple-Entry
Key for San Diego Asteraceae species, and reconciled my
conclusions with The Jepson Manual. This resulted in new insights on
best use of the M-E Key, and in one significant revision in the user
interface. I've now updated the online copy of that Key, including revision
of a few of the coded characters for this subfamily. Notes on the new
insights, and suggestions on best use of the M-E Key will follow within the
next few days.
9 January
- Lamiaceae
family revised extensively with addition of 4 (sub)species not previously
included, viz: Monardella linoides ssp. linoides, Monardella macrantha
ssp. macrantha (with thanks to Jon Rebman for help on these ID's), Salvia
apiana X mellifera ± hybrid ("±" means tentative), and Salvia
carduacea. This family was one of the first that I posted to this
photo-key website in 2003, and I have more detailed photos for several of
the other species from 2004 and 2005 seasons which should help to validate
my identifications. I plan to add these to this family group within the next
several days (after completing up to date posting for Asteraceae Ligulate
subfamily).
